Abdoulaye Wade, president of Senegal: "We have never seen one dollar of the 50 milliard extra that G8 agreed on in Gleneagles." Angela Merkel: "We have the duty to do as promised but only if Africa can live up to certain expectations. RTL 4 is the most critical of the Dutch broadcasts I saw. Even though they use Bono and Geldof to make the final critical statements.

NOS, NL 3, Friday June 8th. At this last day of the G8 the only thing this "young and hip" NOS journal gives attention to is that Putin is prepared to cooperate on the missile defence system with America. A whole 9 seconds is given to the G8 subject, poor Paris Hilton and the art of tattoo are getting main focus in this broadcast. That's what our young future leaders are interested in of course.

Blair is given space to say: "We have recommitted ourselves to all commitments we've made in Gleneagles but the important thing is that we've set how we are going to do them." It is said that the world leaders have agreed on giving Africa much attention again at the next G8.

NOS, Friday June 8th. It starts with the big number 45 milliard as if it is indeed a big gesture. There is little said about earlier promises that haven't been fulfilled and they add: according to aid organizations. And only Canada and Italy are mentioned as having not met their promises.

NOS, Thursday June 7th. Why is Angela Merkel smiling when she talks to the press when no binding agreement has been made? See how Bush is friendly waving to the press when they take pictures? There are a lot of happy faces while there is really nothing to be so proud of, "a not binding compromise" will not result in anything.

G8 leaders today agreed on a text to take "strong and early" action to fight climate change. "Taking into account the scientific knowledge as represented in the recent IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] reports, global greenhouse gas emissions must stop rising, followed by substantial global emission reductions," the text says.

NOS Journaal, NL 3, Wednesday June 6th, 2007. This news report shows the political leaders as superheroes. In fast and slow motion they walk across the red carpet in true Hollywood style. Only they can save the world.

RTL Nieuws, Wednesday June 7th, 2007. This report focuses on the cat and mouse game of the protesters and the police. The march of the protesters to Heiligendamm is being portrayed as the invasion of Normandy. Even though the report shows more than just violent protesters, none of the reasons why they are protesting are addressed. Interesting are the stereotyping Dutch subtitles. Amid all the shouting the only thing they subtitle is "Bastards" (protesters) and "Are you okay?" (policeman).

RTL4, Tuesday June 5th. And in Dutch...on RTL 4 only 36 seconds."The missile defense issue has seriously disturbed the relationship between Russia and the US."

ARD, Tuesday June 5th. For people who speak German: Compare this visit of Bush to Prague to the Dutch, English and French media. At the end of this footage the commentatot says: "....Unfortunately Putin did not yet respond to this harmonious attitude Bush was displaying during his speech today."
